Thoughtful Thursday

Dad and Mom both have a new 'puter! The stuff is getting transferred from the old one, which BTW is literally fried. The power cord decided to send a jolt of super-heated energy straight into the motherboard. Tasty, huh? Long story short, it will be a week before the data is saved, which includes some recent pics I had plans to post. Oh well. In the meantime, there is a decent amount of old videos to put up, so sit back and enjoy!

But first, since it's a Thursday, I'm doing a Thoughtful Thursday. Dad and I have been watching lots of "It's Me or the Dog" with Victoria Stillwell on Animal Planet. This is the counterpoint show to Cesar Millan's "The Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic. Victoria is a trainer, Cesar is a rehabilitator. Victoria is nearly all the way positive training, Cesar is nearly all the way corrective. There is little controversy over Victoria's methods, there is a ton over Cesar's. So, confession time: until about a year ago, Dad was a Cesar-o-phile.

I've seen this guy on TV, and it's easy to see why Dad liked him so much. The guy is charming and engaging, and his methods seem to be downright magical. But then, when Snoufer was getting trained at Petsmart (KGC test, here he comes!), the trainer noted some of the interventions Dad used were Cesar-ish (i.e., "shhht!", or the "alpha" lingo). So, he pulled Dad aside and asked him if he was aware of any of the controversy surrounding Cesar and his methods. Without preaching or lecturing, he advised Dad to check it out and to look into positive training methods similar to what he was being taught at Petsmart. So, Dad did.

The bottom line is, Dad is now a total "positive training" convert. I haven't heard a "shhht!" unless I start to do something really wacky and don't pay attention to anything else. Big Brother says he's never been "alpha rolled" since, and we get lots and lots of treats! Score! Plus, I've watched this Vicky lady with Dad on TV every Sunday, and she seems to be the real deal. No questionable methods, she is presented as fallible, and she has less of a magnetic personality to make me wonder if there isn't an element of "hero worship" in her following. Finally and most importantly, this whole positive training stuff doesn't rely on outdated science and is supported by broad-based and current research. Two weeks ago, she even had some pugs on her show! I kept looking at Dad during the show, as if to say, "See? I'm not THAT bad!" She straigtened them up right, and they and their owners will be better for it, I'm sure.

Plus, she has an English accent. 'Nuff said.

So, I'll never look down at or lecture those who choose less positive methods of training, but I certainly encourage everyone to check out the information for yourself. It's there in spades-- just Google "Cesar Millan controversy" and you'll get more than you ever wanted to know. Just please-- stay away from forums and junk like that. Those places are full of trolls.

And now, the lighter side: some videos from the last Pug Club! Remember Picasso? She's the little black one.

Pugs in the Park 2008

Hello everydoggy! I officially have pictures from the Pugs in the Park in Denver, after a brief scare that Dad had lost the camera. I think Mom would have killed him had that been true. Just sayin'.

So, without further ado:

The setup was a big circle of tents and booths and whatnot, with a bunch of pugs and their humans milling around in the middle, but many more on the edge where it was cool and shady.

BTW, Mom was one number away from winning a raffle prize. ONE NUMBER!! Grrrrr....

I got to see Melissa, who runs Pugnotes! She is Emmitt's human. Unfortunately, Emmitt could not be there, and neither could Daisy and Oscar. Their humans, Jason and Leah were supposed to be there, and maybe they were, but there were so many pugs and people that Dad and Mom couldn't see them. Oh well, maybe next time!

There were tons of pugs available to either foster or rescue. Which made sense, since it was sponsored by Colorado Pug Rescue.

There was one girl fawn pug there that Dad fell in love with and wanted to bring home to foster. Mom, however, is the sensible one. She was really pretty, though.

There was a costume contest, which I did not participate in because I arrived late (thanks a lot, Mom and Dad). But there were plenty of other participants!

I could have won-- I have a killer Halloween costume this year. What's that? You want pictures of it? Well, I've got some, and YOU CAN'T SEE THEM YET!! Bwwwaaaaahahahahahaa!!! I'm holding off until Mom and Dad get theirs in, because our whole family is a themed ensemble. Yeah, it's that cool.

I got to meet lots of new friends

And check out the latest fashions.

Everyone I met was oohing and aahing over my coat-- they all thought it was the most gorgeous color they'd ever seen, that they hadn't seen a pug like that before, and all kinds of other warm fuzzy stuff. I just smiled and posed, because... well, they're right.

Oh, and Dad feels like he finally has closure on the snipping saga. As many people as complimented me on my color, more than a few of them also asked about my breeding status. When Dad explained that I was snipped recently, every single one of them complimented him on that fact and said that my quality of life would be so much better and that there were plenty of pugs who didn't have homes (lots of evidence present for that one!), and that he definitely made the right choice. I haven't seen Dad strut that much in a while, I can tell you that.

All in all, it was a very wonderful day, and filled with tons of excitement. I slept the whole way home, I can tell you that!

And the winner is...

OK, everydoggy. The voting is over for the Pug Lover's Rescue picture. And the winner is...

IT'S A TIE!!

#4 and #5-- "Pug in Close-up" and "Pug with Happiness" tied for the most votes, with eight apiece. I am really impressed that I was able to get 20 votes total, so give yourselves all a big paw! You rock!

So, it comes down to me to make an executive decision. As much as I love the picture of me in close-up, it has some problems with exposure (a bit bright) and background (who wants to see Mom and Dad's messy bedroom?). Therefore, the official winner is...

"Pug with Happiness"

I am having a bit of trouble in sending the picture over to PLR, but it should be up very soon. Here is the link:

PUG LOVER'S RESCUE BANNER CONTEST

**UPDATE** My picture is now up for all to see!

Voting begins October 1st, so everyone be sure to vote for me, Winston, and Clementine! Don't worry, I won't let you forget... :)

Paw-Ess: Don't worry-- I'll post tomorrow about the weekend. Whew!

It is with great joy that I announce the creation of a new group on Pugslife called Colorado Pugs! If anydoggy out there from Colorado wants to join in, they are welcome to.

Emmitt and his mom have already joined, so I'm just waiting on Daisy and Oscar, Jemima Jones Beck, and any other Colorado pugs I have either forgotten about or don't know about yet.

What? You demand pictures of me? Fine. I'll see your picture and raise you a video (from the archives).

No Thoughtful Thursday for today. I'm all thoughtified out right now.

I got an award! Well, nominated at least...

I got nominated for an award! Yeah!

Punchy, Chloe, Zoe, Rosy, and Marty nominated me for the Brilliante Weblog Award:

Which I think is brilliant(e?), because Mom used to be in pageants when she was in college, and she was in the Mrs. Colorado pageant this year. I saw her practice her "I won! face" in front of the mirror when she thought no one was looking, and I watched the Oscars this year, so I think this is what you do?...

Oh. Oh. *wave paw in front of face* Oh. *tear up more than usual* Thank you all so much! *hug the nearest loser* YOU made this happen! YOU all are the real winners! *quickly hog the microphone*

Let's see...

1. Put the link to whomever nominated you on your blog: CHECK
2. Show the picture: CHECK
3. Nominate at least seven other blogs: DOWN BELOW
4. Link to those blogs: STILL DOWN BELOW
5. Leave the nominees a message: DONE AND DONE

So... *pawroll* the nominees are:

Louise the Pug
Bajas the Cyberpug
Winston, the Grand Duke of Pugsworth (and The Stray AKA Cosette)
Raoul (AKA "The Mayor")
Ronin the Pug
Pugsley, the Lovely Lady Pug
Pyrite the Pug

I've checked; I don't think any of them has been nominated before. If they have, I'm sorry! I'll fix it, just let me know.

So let the celebration begin!

Now if only I can get tagged for a meme...
